Sue Hickey has emerged victorious as the newly elected Mayor of Glenorchy, following a by-election triggered by the resignation of former Mayor Bec Thomas. Previously serving as Hobart's Lord Mayor from 2014 to 2018, Hickey secured 11,861 final votes, equivalent to 55.39% of the total, defeating Russell Yaxley who garnered 9,551 final votes, or 44.61%.

In the councillor race, Justin Stringer claimed victory with 10,445 final votes, constituting 53.50%, surpassing Nina Hamasaki who received 9,080 votes, or 46.5%. Both Hickey and Stringer are set to serve until the next ordinary elections in 2026.

"Thank you to everyone who supported me," Hickey expressed following the conclusion of vote counting on Saturday. "I assure you that I will serve as a mayor for all and endeavor to make our city a source of pride for everyone."

An accompanying elector poll conducted alongside the by-election indicated robust community backing for the future of the Glenorchy Pool. A significant 89.02% of the 22,000 voters endorsed immediate repairs and reopening of the facility, while 93.03% supported pursuing future government funding for its redevelopment.
